Rainivoninahitriniony

Rainivoninahitriniony (* 1821 ; † 1869 in Ambohimandroso ) was Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Madagascar from 1852 to 1864.

He was the son of Rainiharo and half-brother of Rainilaiarivony and served as head of government for Queen Ranavalona I , King Radama II and Queen Rasoherina . He was also married to the latter. Raharo, as he was usually called, enforced the supremacy of the Merina over the other peoples of Madagascar militarily. Under Ranavalona I. he implemented the anti-Christian and anti-European policies of the ruler. When she died, he officially supported the new king in his modernist politics. In reality he was a supporter of the Alt Hova party, which did not want any reforms. An active role in the assassination of Radama II is likely, but not proven. The new ruler Rasoherina, widow of Radama II, soon married the unpopular Raharo. But already in July 1864 he was deposed (both as Prime Minister and as husband) and had to make way for his younger half-brother Rainilaiarivony (in both cases). The ambitious man tried to eliminate the new queen with a plot, but it did not succeed. He lived in exile in Antsirabé . When the queen was dying seriously ill, he tried in 1868 with partisans to prevent a woman from becoming head of state in her place. But the revolt that was supposed to bring Prince Rasata to power failed. The former head of government had to go into exile in Ambohimandroso because of the conspiracy and died there a short time later.
