Rocket experiments on Zingst

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The eastern part of the Zingst peninsula in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania was a restricted military area during the GDR era. On the former NVA -Übungsplatz in Sundischen meadows led from 1970 to 1992 the Meteorological Service of the GDR , by 1990, the German Weather Service , various experiments with sounding rockets by.

At the beginning of the 1970s, five rockets of the Polish type Meteor 1E were launched here . From October 21, 1988, Soviet MMR06-M missiles were launched here. Since these rockets could fly up to 80 kilometers high and the restricted sea area off the coast of the military training area was only 23.6 kilometers deep and 25.5 kilometers wide, the launch angle of these rockets had to be adjusted to within two degrees by means of ingenious procedures in order to avoid a decline outside of the cordoned off area.

While the first launches of MMR06-M missiles were unsuccessful due to technical problems, the first successful ascent was achieved on April 12, 1989 with the implementation of scientific measurements. Even after the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989 and German reunification on October 3, 1990, rocket launches were initially continued. However, the launch of rockets in Zingst was stopped on December 19, 1990, as a new procedure for determining the launch angle was being worked out for safety reasons. Between February 14, 1992 and April 10, 1992, another 19 Russian MMR06-M rockets were launched in Zingst. Six of these starts were successful. Although other missiles were still available, the launch of missiles in Zingst had to be stopped in April 1992 because the Bundeswehr, which was needed to secure the restricted area, vacated the space.
