biography

Ralf Klement's artistic activity began in 1970 with painting. Two years later, Klement devoted himself increasingly to sculpture and his first sculptures were created. Since 1977 he has worked as a freelance artist. 1980-82 Klement took part in the Eichsfeld pleinairs. At the beginning of the 80s, Klement was given a ban on events, after which it was lifted in 1994, he initially took nudes. When he was accepted into the VBK of the GDR in 1988, he was granted a travel permit to the West. In 1990 Klement received the award from Gothaer Versicherung as well as a scholarship from the Kunstfond Bonn and began the Land Art Project “Cubes in Europe”. In the same year he was co-founder of the art association Schloss Röderhof near Halberstadt; In 1993 he founded “blok” together with Susanne Isabel Bockelmann; 1999 foundation of “Monday Shake”; 2007 founder of the “Mirabel Company”. In 2006 Klement was awarded the Mörfelden-Walldorf Sculpture Prize.

Ralf Klement's repertoire is broad: his oeuvre includes paintings such as graphics, collages and handcrafted chainsaw sculptures. The latter impress with their expressive and powerful implementation and yet prove the sensitive empathy that Klement shows his works. Klement is particularly interested in the implementation of materiality, so his pictures have rough surfaces and appear coarse-grained. Characteristic of Klement's painting is the impasto application of paint and his color palette, which is based on earth tones.
