Ralph Bown
Ralph Bown (born February 22, 1891 in Fairport (New York) , † July 25, 1971 ) was an American radio pioneer.
Life
Ralph Bown received his Ph. D. from Cornell University , where he also taught physics. During World War I he served in the United States Army Signal Corps , where he had vacuum tubes developed as head of the radio laboratory. He then went to AT & T's development department , which became Bell Labs in 1934.
Brown worked on electromagnetism for broadcasting, ship-to-shore communications, aeronautical communications, radar and intercontinental telephony.
He was an advisor to the National Defense Research Committee and the Secretary of War .
Ralph Brown became head of research at Bell Labs, where he announced the invention of the transistor at a conference in June 1948.
