Slazenger is a traditional English sporting goods brand that dates back to 1881 .

history

Slazenger was founded by the Jewish brothers Ralph (* 1844) and Albert Slazenger (* 1857) in England in 1881 and started manufacturing sports equipment such as golf and tennis balls, tennis and cricket bats. Tennis balls for Wimbledon have been supplied since 1902 .

In 1922 the company opened its first factories in Australia, followed by more in Canada in 1924. In 1933, Fred Perry won his first Grand Slam tournament with rackets from the brand. During the Second World War, weapons were also produced, and in 1940 the Slazenger factories in London were completely destroyed by German bombs.

In 1959 Ralph Slazenger Jr. sold the company to Dunlop Rubber . In 1963 Slazenger brought out a clothing line for professional sports for the first time; today the company also offers watches and accessories. The 1964 film Goldfinger had a huge advertising impact when Bond beats the title villain by stepping on a branded ball (hiding it from Goldfinger) and wearing one of their sweaters.

BTR (now Invensys ) bought Dunlop Rubber in 1985 and combined all of their sports brands under the name "Dunlop Sport". In 1996 the company, which was separated from the rest of Dunlop, was renamed "Dunlop Slazenger" after another change of ownership. In 2004 Sports Direct International took over this area for £ 40 million  and sold the rights to the European golf business to JJB Sports.
