Josef Anton Berchtold

Joseph Anton Berchtold (born June 27, 1780 in Greich or Möril near Brig; † March 9, 1859 in Sion ) was a Swiss Catholic clergyman and geodesist .

Life

He was the son of the farmer Peter Berchtold. After attending the college in Brig , he was trained at the seminary in Sion. Between 1803 and 1816 he was pastor in Leukerbad . He was also director of the seminary in Sion from 1807 to 1811. In 1808 he became titular canon and in 1816 ordinary capitular. Between 1816 and 1826 he served as a penitentiary . Thereafter, Berchtold was church attorney in Lower Valais from 1830 until his death . In addition, from 1837 he was dean of the Basilique de Valère . In 1840 he had the bishop's house built in Sion, which was renovated in 1982.

He made a name for himself as the founder of the elementary schools in Sion and Leukerbad. He was also involved in the School Act of 1827. He also initiated the creation of an insurance company and, in 1853, a debt repayment fund .

It was also important for surveying the Valais . Initially without a commission, he began triangulating the region in 1829 . From 1834 he worked on behalf of the state. His work was a basis for the topographic map of Switzerland .

He also organized aid measures, for example on the occasion of the flooding by the Rhone in 1839 and various fires. He was also active as an author of sacred and scientific works.
