Ralph de Cromwell, 1st Baron Cromwell (* 14th century; † August 27, 1397 ) was an English peer .

Origin and family background

Ralph de Cromwell came from an old Anglo-Norman noble family. He was the great-great-grandson of another Ralph de Cromwell, who took part in his campaigns in Wales from 1276 to 1282 under King Edward I of England . Ralph was the son and heir of the country nobleman, also called Ralph de Cromwell, who died on October 28, 1364, and his wife Anice de Bellers.

Life and political career

Ralph de Cromwell, whose date of birth is unknown, married Maud, the sister of William Bernake, before June 20, 1365. Together with her he acquired the Tattershall estate in the county of Lincolnshire on March 13, 1367 from the king . As an important advisor devoted to the king, he received a writ of summons for a seat in the House of Lords on December 28, 1375 , making him hereditary Baron Cromwell and peer of the kingdom. He took this seat under the kings Edward III until his death in 1397 . and Richard II . Under Richard II he also had military functions, as he was the leader of a group of knights from 1386 to 1387 as Knight Banneret . He served Richard II until the invasion of his opponents under the later King Henry IV in 1397. He himself died on August 27, 1397.
