Rami Ollaik

Rami Salman Ollaik (sometimes written Olaik, Olleik, or Oleik; Arabic رامي سلمان عليق; * November 2, 1972 ) is a Lebanese author, attorney and lecturer in beekeeping at the American University of Beirut (AUB).

His first novel, an autobiography under the title La route des abeilles , was published in 2013 in English translation as The Bees Road . He describes his personal journey from growing up within Hezbollah and then moving away from Hezbollah.

Life

Ollaik was born in Khiam in southern Lebanon . His family had been familiar with beekeeping for generations. During the Lebanese civil war , the family had to move several times due to the violence and destruction.

At the age of 13, Ollaik had been recruited by Hezbollah. At the age of 19 he moved to Beirut , where he enrolled at the AUB for agricultural sciences. In 1992 he became the representative of Hezbollah (Party of God) at the AUB, but in 1996 he resigned.

He later developed relationships with people of different religious and political affiliations. This helped him reassess his system of beliefs and led him to leave Hezbollah in late 1996. In the same year, Ollaik finished his studies of agricultural sciences at the AUB and law at the Lebanese University (Arabic: الجامعة اللبنانية, French: Université Libanaise). He then began studying for a master’s degree in agricultural economics , also at AUB, and later joined the Beirut Bar Association.

In 1999, Ollaik moved to the United States to study at the University of Florida for a Ph.D. -Enroll degree program at the Food and Resource Economics Department . At the beginning of 2002, months after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 , after a stay in Lebanon, he was first interrogated at John F. Kennedy International Airport while entering the USA , then detained for four hours and finally deported to Lebanon. He was allowed to finish his doctoral thesis via correspondence, and in 2004 he returned to the AUB as a professor of beekeeping.

Ollaik founded Lebanon Ahead , a citizens' movement with the aim of improving the economic situation in the country and transforming Lebanon into a peaceful and democratic nation in which a platform for understanding between the ethnic groups and various religious groups is created. He also founded a coalition of independent democratic-civilian forces, Takadom , and ran two other candidates for Lebanon Ahead for a seat in parliament in the 2009 election.

In 2008, Ollaik wrote his autobiography, the Arabic-language version of The Bees Road - Rami Ollaik's Republic , which was published that same year. In this autobiography he traces his experiences with Hezbollah and his departure from it. The book criticizes the so-called party of God and its threat to a harmonious coexistence and takes the reader on a journey from South Lebanon and Hezbollah to the American University of Beirut and to America.
