Ranagri (pronounced: Ra-na-grai) is an Irish-English band from London . The band name comes from the Irish village of Rathnagrew, where singer and songwriter Dónal Rogers grew up. Their music combines traditional and contemporary folk and world music with jazzy and progressive elements.

Band history

The band was founded in 2013 by Dónal Rogers (guitar, vocals) and musicians friends Eliza Marshall (flutes, whistles), Jean Kelly (harp) and Tad Sargent (bodhran, bouzouki).

In 2014 the band released their debut album "Fort of the Hare" on the German record label Stockfisch Records , which contains exclusively self-written songs.

Singer Tony Christie released the album "Great Irish Songbook" with Ranagri in 2015. It contains classics of Irish / Scottish folk such as "Star of the County Down", "Carrickfergus" or "She Moved Through The Fair".

In 2016 percussionist Tad Sargent left the band. The Englishman Joe Danks took his place. Danks is from Nottingham and plays drums, classical tenor guitar and the bodhràn.

In the same year the next album followed with "Voices" (Goatskin Records), on which some of the songs from the debut album were released.

The harpist Jean Kelly left the group in 2017. Eleanor "Ellie" Turner was her successor.

The contract with Stockfisch Records was extended in 2018, and in autumn of that year the album “Playing for Luck” was released, with which Ranagri then went on tour in Europe in 2019, including Great Britain, Ireland, Germany and the Netherlands. As on the previous albums, most of the songs here were written by Dónal Rogers.
