Yaacob bin Ibrahim (born October 3, 1955 in a British colony in Singapore ) is a Singaporean politician ( PAP ). As a member of the ruling People's Action Party , he was previously Minister for Communication and Information, Minister for Muslim Affairs and Minister for Cybersecurity. He was a member of the Singaporean parliament from 1997 to 2020 .

Personal life

Yaacob Ibrahim has been doing community service since his school days and has been involved in several organizations. These include the Association of Muslim Professionals, Jamiyah, Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura and the Nature Society. He was initially employed there as a volunteer tutor and later became Chairman of the Council for the Development of the Malay-Muslim Community in Singapore (Yayasan Mendaki) in March 2002.

Yaacob is married and has a son and a daughter. Questions as a on citizenship of his son and whether he would be in the civil service in Singapore, raised diplomatic telegram of the US of WikiLeaks the two children described the minister as a US citizen. In response, Yaacob made it clear that his two children, due to his wife's American citizenship, have dual American and Singaporean citizenship until they are 18. He also confirmed that his son would serve in the civil service.

Yaacob has three siblings. His eldest brother is called Ismail Ibrahim. His sister, Zuraidah Ibrahim, was a former journalist for The Straits Times and now works for the South China Morning Post . His younger brother Latiff Ibrahim is a lawyer.

Education and Early Career

Yaacob was trained at Tanjong Katong Technical Secondary School. In 1980 he graduated from the National University of Singapore with honors in civil engineering and received a PhD in philosophy from Stanford University in 1989 . He was then a postdoc at Cornell University . In 1990 he returned to Singapore and in 1991 moved to a faculty at the National University of Singapore. In 1994 Yaacob received the award for excellent teaching achievements in his field. He is currently on leave from the university as an associate professor.

Political career

Yaacob has been responsible for the constituency of the representation of the Jalan Besar group and for the constituency of the representation of the Moulmein-Kallang group since 1997. He was also the first mayor of the Central Singapore District from April to November 2001.

Yaacob was Parliamentary Secretary (July 1, 1998 to April 30, 2001) and Senior Parliamentary Secretary (April 1, 2001 to November 23, 2001) in the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. In November 2001 he became Minister of State in the Ministry of Community Development and Sports. Later in March 2002, Yaacob became the incumbent minister for community development and sports, as well as the minister responsible for Muslim affairs, and in May 2003 a full member of the cabinet.

In 2004 he became Minister for Environment and Water Resources. After the Bukit Timah Canal overflowed its banks in 2009 after a heavy rain shower and flooded parts of Bukit Timah , Yaacob noted that it was an "unusual" event that "happened once in 50 years". The country was hit by more than 70 other flash floods between 2010 and 2013.

In May 2011, Yaacob became Minister of Information, Communication and the Arts in a cabinet reshuffle. He continues to serve as Minister for Muslim Affairs. Yaacob is vice chairman of the Central Executive Committee (PAP).

Yaacob Ibrahim resigned from the cabinet on April 30, 2018. His successor for the Ministry of Communication and Information is S. Iswaran , who returned in November 2018 as Chairman of the Central Executive Committee (PAP).

Yaacob Ibrahim retired from politics on June 23, 2020. His successor for the cabinet is Josephine Teo in Jalan Besar GRC and Wan Rizal Wan Zakariah in the constituency of Kolam Ayer.
