S. Iswaran (2017)

S. Iswaran (born June 14, 1962 in Singapore ) is a Singaporean politician and former executive director. As a member of the ruling People's Action Party (PAP), he was Minister for Trade and Industry (Industry). He is currently Minister for Communication and Information and Minister responsible for Cybersecurity. Previously, he was Minister in the Prime Minister's Office and Second Minister of the Interior, Trade and Industry. He has been a member of parliament since 1997.

Career

Iswaran has worked in both the public and private sectors. He was Senior Vice President and Managing Director of Temasek Holdings , Director of International Trade for the Department of Commerce and Industry, and Chief Executive Officer of the Singapore Indian Development Association (SINDA).

Iswaran was first elected to parliament in January 1997. From September 2004 to June 2006 he was Deputy Speaker of Parliament.

On July 1, 2006, Iswaran was appointed Minister of State in the Ministry of Trade and Industry. On April 1, 2008, he was promoted to Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry. On April 1, 2009, he was appointed Senior Minister of State in the Ministry of Education and Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry.

Following the 2011 parliamentary elections, Iswaran was promoted to the Cabinet as Minister in the Prime Minister's Office, Second Interior Minister, and Second Minister for Trade and Industry. As the second minister for the interior, trade and industry, he has also legally regulated alcohol, remote gambling and shisha and oversaw the extension of the F1 race until 2017.

Iswaran is currently a member of the constituency of the West Coast Group Representation Constituency (GRC). In 2020, PAP West Coast GRC narrowly won 51.69 percent of the vote for the PSP, headed by Tan Cheng Bock , of whom he was the presidential candidate in the 2011 presidential election, also narrowly won by Tony Tan .

Iswaran is a graduate of St. Andrew's School. He studied economics at Adelaide University , where he graduated with honors. He also holds a Masters of Public Administration from Harvard University .
