Rangitoto Channel

The Rangitoto Channel is one of several passages between the islands of the inner Hauraki Gulf near the mouth of Waitemata Harbor east of Auckland in New Zealand . The canal is particularly important because it is the only deep water access to the port of Auckland that can be used by large container ships and cruise ships . It is also used by the ferry to Great Barrier Island .

The channel lies between the volcanic cone of Rangitoto on Rangitoto Island in the southeast and the east coast of North Shore City in the north. The east coast has no settlements, on the west coast are the suburbs of the North Shore called East Coast Bays . At the southern end of the canal is the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park .
