Alternative name (s): Rathsburg
Castle type : Niederungsburg
Conservation status: departed
Place: Rantum

The Rantum Castle , later also called Rathsburg , is an abandoned castle on the North Frisian island of Sylt in Schleswig-Holstein . It is probably buried under the dunes .

The Rantum Castle was one of four castles that belonged to Klaus Limbeck around 1370 . It is said to have stood south of Rantum on the "Burgberg", several kilometers south of the Tinnumburg .

In the 19th century, Sylt local researcher Christian Peter Hansen advocated the theory that the Rantum Castle was located on an old military road that ran along the “ Hörnumer Landrückens” via Sylt to Amrum and Föhr .

Little is known about the structure of the castle. It is said that the building had a large underground vault in which pirates often gathered. Later, the lords of the castle from Sylt and Föhr held their deliberations here. For this reason, according to Hansen, the Rantum Castle was also called Rathsburg.

A source indicates that the Rantumburg was almost completely covered by sand in 1762 and was already so close to the sea at that time that it was feared that it would be washed away by the waves. Other sources of literature express the hope that the castle may soon be cleared of the sand from the dunes .
