Christian Peter Hansen (born August 28, 1803 in Westerland ; † December 9, 1879 in Keitum ), often known as C. P. Hansen , was a teacher, draftsman and chronicler of the island of Sylt .

Life

C. P. Hansen was the son of the sexton and navigation teacher Jap Peter Hansen , who co-founded Frisian-language literature with the publication of the play Der Geitzhals on the island of Silt (1809) and who lived in Keitum from 1820. Christian Peter Hansen was a teacher at the then Keitum elementary school ; In addition, he collected numerous legends, stories and stories from the island at a young age. His collection on the history and culture of the island of Sylt quickly became known nationwide. From a correspondence with Theodor Storm it emerges that he sent Storm numerous notes on the Sylt legends at his request.

In 1856 his chronicle of the Frisian Uthlande was published. In it he claimed that the Frisians had used the saying " Lewer duad üs Slaaw " as early as 1252 during the battle of Oldenswort . There is no source for this, but Hansen still helped to popularize the saying in North Friesland .

In 1859 his book Wegweiser für Badende in Westerland was published ; this work can be regarded as the first travel guide for the still young bathing life on the island of Sylt. Numerous other works and publications on the history and culture of the island of Sylt followed and ensured that CP Hansen is still regarded as the most important chronicler of the island of Sylt. In addition, Hansen was one of the re-founders of the ancient tradition of biike distilling on the island.

In 1869 CP Hansen took part in the Schleswig-Holstein State Industrial Exhibition in Altona and presented fine knitwear. In doing so, he contributed to making these Sylt handicrafts known. In addition, he presented exhibits from his fossil collection and trigonometry scales made of boxwood that his father had made and received a bronze medal for his contributions to this exhibition.

Drawing, he roamed his home island of Sylt and made numerous small landscapes and sea representations, several of which were made as lithographs to sell to tourists. "With these drawings, as with his writings, with which he wanted to preserve the old Sylt for posterity, Hansen also promoted the emerging tourism." ( Ulrich Schulte-Wülwer in: Künstlerinsel Sylt ).

Hansen's former home in Keitum now bears witness to the living culture of the time as the Museum Altfriesisches Haus , and there are also numerous relics of the chronicler.
