life and work

Köck was born the son of a train driver and was the older brother of Max KOCK-Wichmann . He was a student at the teaching institute of the Kunstgewerbemuseum and the University of Fine Arts in Berlin . Since 1893 he regularly charged the Great Berlin Art Exhibition with landscapes , portraits and genre paintings . After the First World War he came to Sylt in 1918 , where he found numerous motifs. In 1921 he married Cornelia Claasen from Sylt and finally settled on the island, but remained a member of the Berlin Artists' Association .

Köck is best known for his Sylt landscapes , which he preferred to do in oil . His motifs show Sylt, which was still sparsely populated, before it was opened up for tourism through the construction of the Hindenburgdamm . But his works also include plays.

He also became known as a lithographer through designs for the Hamburg-Amerikanische Paketfahrt-Aktiengesellschaft (Hapag), for which he worked from around 1920 to 1930.

His grave is still cared for today in the cemetery of St. Niels Church on Sylt. The Hugo-Kätze-Weg in Westerland / Sylt is named after him. Occasionally, works by the artist are offered in auction shops.
