Helene Varges

Helene Varges (born November 17, 1877 in Johannisburg , East Prussia , † March 21, 1946 in Westerland on Sylt ) was a German painter, draftsman and illustrator.

Helene Varges attended the drawing class at the trade and trade school in Stettin , and in 1896 she went to the Royal Art School in Berlin . A state scholarship enabled her to attend Emil Doepler's painting class at the teaching institute of the Berlin Museum of Decorative Arts in 1897 . In 1902 she joined the “Steglitzer Werkstatt”, one of the most important germ cells of the German book art movement . She made a name for herself with ex-libris and artistic book designs in the spirit of Art Nouveau . After the Steglitz workshop was closed, Helene Varges worked as a drawing teacher. She moved to the North Sea island of Juist in 1904 and earned her living drawing works for the Biological Institute on Helgoland . Until 1919 she lived in Emden and Lüneburg and in summer on Heligoland. In 1908 she came to Sylt for the first time with her partner, the writer Margarete Boie . The two were so fascinated by the island that they moved their center of life to Westerland from 1919 to 1928. Margarete Boie wrote several novels based on the cultural history of Sylt. Helene Varges illustrated the books. Since the early 1920s she has been creating free pen and pastel drawings . In 1933 the portfolio "Pictures from Sylt" was published.
