Ernst Riewert Schlee (born January 5, 1910 in Heide , Holstein , † March 26, 1994 in Schleswig ) was a German art historian and museum director .

Life

Born in Heider Ernst Schlee, after graduating from high school , he studied art history , philosophy , German and folklore at the universities of Marburg , Vienna , Berlin and Kiel . In 1934 he received his doctorate from the University of Kiel with a dissertation under Arthur Haseloff on The Iconography of the Paradise Rivers.

In the autumn of 1934 Schlee took part in an ethnological course at the "Baltic Institute" at the Nordic Museum , Stockholm , and got to know the important Swedish folk scholars Sigurd Erixon (1888–1968) and Sigfrid Svensson (1901–1984) who had a lasting impact on him . Ernst Schlee then worked on a study of Schleswig-Holstein's art history . In addition, he put himself in the service of the " NS cultural community " for about two years , helping to set up an "art ring" and organize exhibitions. According to his own statement, the goal was u. a. to show living Schleswig-Holstein artists also in the provinces. In the years before 1939 Schlee was also head of the NSDAP district culture office in Kiel . As such, in a speech at the inauguration of the folkish wall painting by the local artist Gerhart Bettermann, which culminated in a “Führer front wall” in the hall of the then Kappelner town hall, this was “exemplary”. In 1984 Schlee commented on his role in the time of National Socialism in a long essay .

In 1936 Ernst Schlee was appointed lecturer for "German Folk Art" with special consideration of the relations to the Scandinavian north at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel. Until 1939 he held lectures and exercises on folklore topics at the art history seminar. After the dissolution of the " NS cultural community ", Schlee received scholarships from the University of Kiel, which were connected with a habilitation project on the "development of the farmhouse in Schleswig-Holstein". At least in March 1937 he was still head of the NSDAP district culture office in Kiel. Finally, on October 1, 1939, Schlee became a "scientific assistant" at the Schleswig-Holstein State Museum in Kiel. In 1940 he was drafted into the Wehrmacht . The habilitation thesis remained unfinished.

After military service and imprisonment, he resumed his work at the museum in 1948. Initially as a "scientific assistant" he was commissioned to organize the relocation of the museum to Gottorf Castle in Schleswig . In the summer of 1948, the evacuated collections were transported to Schleswig. In 1949 Schlee was appointed museum director. In 1950 the house was reopened as the Schleswig-Holstein State Museum in Gottorf Castle.

Ernst Schlee expanded the state museum's collection concept to include 20th century art. From 1950 he published the yearbooks of the Schleswig-Holstein State Museum ( Art in Schleswig-Holstein ). Another focal point was folklore: in 1957, after the last traditional stocks of equipment for field, house and farm management were replaced by products from the industrial age in the economic boom , Schlee initiated the Schleswig-Holstein national history survey . On the island of Föhr in 1954 he tried out the methods of such a comprehensive inventory. With his basic work, he provided the material for folklore research into everyday history , as it was u. a. was continued by Günter Wiegelmann , as well as for a historical image science .

After it was founded in 1957, Ernst Schlee was a member of the Advisory Board of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation . In 1968 Schlee received an honorary professorship from the state of Schleswig-Holstein . In 1979 Schlee was awarded the City of Kiel's Culture Prize. Schlee was second chairman of the German Society for Folklore until 1970 . From 1975 he lived in retirement and continued to work in research until shortly before his death.
