St. Niels (Sylt): interior

Furnishing

St. Niels contains a number of valuable works of art: The crucifix (a passion cross that hangs over the arch to the apse ) dates from the 13th or 14th century and is the oldest piece of furniture. The figure of Christ probably dates from the second half of the 15th century, making it younger than the cross itself.

The three-winged late Gothic carved altar shows a coronation of Mary in the middle shrine, which is flanked by two bishops, on the left side there is Nicolaus or Severin , on the right a figure representing Dionysius . The apostles are in the side wings of the altar. In the 19th century, the center shrine was removed from the altar due to strict Lutheranism. In its place an oil painting of the Thuringian Minna von Doetinchem de Rande was added , which showed Jesus walking over the sea and Peter sinking . In 1925, the Coronation of Mary was reinstalled in its original place.

The lush, eagle-crowned 14-armed chandelier dates from 1682. The eight-armed brass chandelier is probably older.
