Building and exhibition

The house was built in 1739 as a home for a captain. A number of furnishings therefore show marine motifs. In the 19th century it was the home of the teacher, chronicler, collector and draftsman Christian Peter Hansen (1803–1879) who put together the basis of the museum's collection, which opened in 1908. Here he was the first museum director on the island of Sylt.

It is a Uhland-Frisian house type that was typically built in post-and-beam construction. These houses are built low and elongated and with their narrow sides facing east and west in order to offer less surface to the wind. The roof structure rests on two rows of wooden stands. These are dug deep into the ground and lie on large field stones. Two longitudinal beams are supported on the uprights and the ceiling beams across them. The rafters were attached to the ends, wooden slats were then nailed to them and the thatch was "sewn" onto them. The outer walls are made of brick. The typical Frisian gable of this house also had the purpose that in the event of a fire the burning thatch would slide to the side but not in front of the front door to keep the escape route free.

The eastern part of the house (the former threshing floor and further chambers) shows in four rooms the Keitum living culture of Sylt captain families of the 18th and 19th centuries. The pantry (Spiiskaamer) is adjacent to the kitchen (Kööken), which also has an alcove . The living room (Kööv) also has a stove and two alcoves. The Pesel (Piisel) and used by the housewife especially for handicrafts basement chamber (Kelerkaamer) allow the view of the Westerley . The box office and an exhibition with exhibits from the Neolithic to the 19th century are located in the western part of the building . The family history of the Hansen is also dealt with, in particular the life of Christian Peter Hansen and Jap Peter Hansen and their literary and other work. The museum is supported by the Sölring Foriining cultural and local history association founded in 1906
