history

The tradition from the second book of Samuel tells of constant battles of the Israelites against the Philistines in the time of David. There were some huge men among the Philistines. The heroes of David would have defeated them, however.

The Rafaites ("sons of Rapha") who fought with David's followers and were killed by them were:

  • Yishbi-Benob ("Yishbi from Nob") ( 2 Sam 21.16  EU ): The weight of his lance tip weighed three hundred shekels of bronze. Abishai , the son of Zeruja , killed him.
  • Saph (also Sippai or Saf) ( 2 Sam 21.18  EU ): He was slain by Sibbechai from Husha.
  • Goliath (h) from Gat (h) ( 2 Sam 21,19  EU ): It is said that the shaft of his spear was like a weaver's tree . He was slain by Ellhanan (Elchanan), the son of Jaare-Oregim.
  • Lachmi, the brother of Goliath ( 1 Chr 20.5  EU ): He was slain by Elchanan, the son of Jair.
  • A man "of great length" with six fingers on his hands and six toes on his feet (his name is not mentioned) ( 2 Sam 21.20  EU ) and ( 1 Chr 20.6  EU ): he was killed by Jonathan, the son of David's brother Shimea.
