Ras Laffan
Ras Laffan ( Arabic رأس لفان Ra's Laffan , DMG Raʾs Laffān ) is an industrial settlement of the natural gas industry in Qatar, founded in 1997,about 80 km northeast of Doha . It is operated by Qatar Petroleum . On an area of 106 km² there is an 8.5 km² industrial port (since 1996), several gas liquefaction plants that aresuppliedfrom the Nord-Feld and industrial plants for petrochemicals . In 2004, the population of the workers, who mainly came from the Indian subcontinent, was 31,611.
In May 2006, the construction of a thermal cracking plant (steam cracker) with a capacity of 1.3 million tons of ethene per year began. The facility, operated by Ras Laffan Olefins Company (RLOC), was scheduled to go into operation in 2008.
In 2004, Qatar Petroleum and Exxon Mobil announced they would invest approximately US $ 7 billion in a RasGas II gas liquefaction plant for 750 BCF natural gas in Ras Laffan, destined primarily for the United States.
In 2005 ExxonMobil and Qatar Petroleum began building a gas liquefaction plant for 750 BCF natural gas for the UK with Qatargas II.
In 2006 a GTL system from Sasol went into operation in Ras Laffan.
In October 2003 there was an agreement between Royal Dutch Shell and Qatar Petroleum for the construction of a GTL plant in Ras Laffan. Parts of it should go into production in 2009. Further investments of around 130 billion US dollars are planned in the industrial city by 2015, whereby the area of Ras Laffan will almost double to 205 km². The port will also be adapted to the increased production capacities.
