the maze

The lawn maze in Saffron Walden in Essex (English Saffron Walden Maze ) is the largest preserved lawn maze in England . The age and purpose of the maze on the eastern edge of the parish are unknown. It is believed to date from the Middle Ages . The first reference in the town's records is from 1699.

The labyrinth has a diameter of about 33 m, the diagonal measures 45 m. Its four outer loops, known as "ears", give it its characteristic appearance. The narrow, winding path starts on the north side and is about 1400 m long. The path was originally cut into the lawn in such a way that the white chalk layer immediately below was visible. The paths were laid with bricks in 1911, and extensive restoration was carried out in 1979: the lawn was improved and the 6000 red bricks were widened to form a path that was almost 12 cm wide.
