history

In October 2000, Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta, the former Prime Minister of Mali, resigned from the party of incumbent President Alpha Oumar Konaré of the Alliance pour la Démocratie en Mali-Parti Pan-Africain pour la Liberté, la Solidarité et la Justice (ADEMA-PASJ) which he chaired until 1994. With the help of activists and executives, Keïta founded the Alternative 2002 movement in February 2001 to make it possible to run for president again. The Rassemblement pour le Mali followed in June.

In the first round of elections in April 2002 Keïta landed with 21.04% of the vote behind the official candidate of ADEMA-PASJ , Soumaïla Cissé , and the winner Amadou Toumani Touré .

Together with the Congrès national d'initiative démocratique (CNID) and the Mouvement patriotique pour le renouveau (MPR), the Rassemblement pour le Mali was part of the Espoir 2002 coalition for the 2002 parliamentary elections. After these elections, the Rassemblement pour le Mali became Mali's second largest party with 45 MPs.

The movement won around 13% of the vote in the local elections on May 30, 2004.

In January 2007, Keïta was again the designated top candidate for the 2007 Malian presidential election . In the election he reached second place behind Touré with 19.15 percent of the vote.

As part of the opposition Front pour la démocratie et la république (FDR), the RPM won 11 out of 147 seats in the 2007 parliamentary elections in Mali .

The party emerged victorious in the 2013 elections when Mali returned to democracy after a military coup.
