Banff Town Hall

The Town Hall of Banff is located in the Scottish town of Banff in the Council area Aberdeenshire . The building was added to the Scottish Monument Lists in Monument Category B in 1972 . The adjacent bell tower is classified separately as a Category A monument.

history

No later than 1551, the Burgh Banff had a Tolbooth . In 1710 a new Tolbooth was built, from whose cells several prisoners escaped in 1712. In the course of the 1760s the bell tower was built, which today adjoins the town hall. The Scottish architect John Adam is responsible for the design .

The town hall was built in 1796 to a design by James Reid . Originally, it housed the city council premises, a meeting room, a drawing room, a prison and office space for judicial officers. In the meantime, all the rooms have been converted into offices and larger rooms have been divided.

The three-story City Hall is on Low Street in the historic city center. Its main facade, which is exposed to the west, is five axes wide. While the remaining facades with Harl are plastered, there is the ground floor rusticated to see layers of masonry executed. In the middle, a two-winged wooden portal leads into the interior. Twelve-part lattice windows are embedded along the facade . The corner stones are rusticated. The town hall closes with a slate-covered gable roof .

The slightly set back bell tower connects to the town hall on the south side. The four-story tower has a square floor plan. The entrance portal on the west side is crowned with a simple cornice . In the second section of the tower a clock tower is embedded, which is located below an arched window . The hexagonal , tapered helmet with oval portholes closes with a gold-plated ball with a weather valve .
