Banff ( Gaelic : Banbh ) is a municipality in Scotland on the North Sea coast north of Aberdeen .

Banff is in the Aberdeenshire Council Area at the mouth of the River Deveron in the North Sea.

In past centuries, Banff was the eponymous capital of the county of Banffshire . Banff forms a communal unit with the neighboring community of Macduff on the east bank of the Deveron. The twin towns jointly maintain an aquarium, the Colleonard Sculpture Park and the Duff House , built by William Adam in 1730 and now owned by the National Gallery of Scotland . The small town has had a port since the 17th century at the latest . Banff was used as a location for the film Local Hero .
