The town hall in Bad Salzungen

The town hall is the seat of the city administration of the Thuringian district town Bad Salzungen .

Construction of the first council building began in 1289. In 1506 the building was expanded to include a new council cellar and council chamber, which was expanded in 1583. In 1640 the first town hall burned down. In the following years it was rebuilt in stages. In 1647 the town hall tower was completed. Another city fire destroyed the town hall with the city archives in 1786, and significant parts of the old town were also destroyed by flames. Today's town hall was built in 1790 as a three-storey mansard roof building, including the cellar vault. The facade facing the market is emphasized by a roof turret with a weather vane and a clock.

A “Salzunger Elle” forged from iron in 1529 is one of the testimonies of the municipal judiciary. This part served as a reference object (measure of length) for the Salzunger Marktmeister and can be seen today in the southern staircase of the town hall.
