City Hall (Porto)
The Porto City Hall (pt. Câmara Municipal do Porto) stands at the far end of Avenida dos Aliados.
Construction work began in 1920 based on plans by the architect António Correia da Silva . After a few interruptions, the building was not finally completed until 1955. It consists of six floors, a basement and two courtyards. Exactly in the middle of the town hall, a 70 m high tower rises up. Inside there is a carillon, which can be reached via an internal staircase consisting of 180 steps.
The facade is made of granite from the São Gens and Fafe quarries . It is adorned with a dozen sculptures designed by José Sousa Caldas and Henrique Moreira, each depicting activities typical of Porto, such as: B. viticulture, industry and navigation. In front of the building is a statue depicting the poet Almeida Garrett (1799–1854). It was made in 1954 by the sculptor Barata Feio.
