In 1248 the "Nova Civitas" (New City) was first mentioned in a document. The New Palace was built from 1619 to 1717 .

A first town hall was mentioned in 1576. 1664 was the first city fire. In 1671 a town hall on the market was named, of which it is said in 1692 that it has no roofs and no spaces. In 1694 there was a second city fire. In 1716 the dilapidated town hall was torn down.

In 1720 a second town hall was built. In the great city fire of 1728, many houses and this town hall fell victim to the flames. In 1741, the “Kietz” district burned down almost completely.

The third, new town hall was built from 1802 to 1806 in baroque style as a free - standing half - timbered house on the roughly 30 × 40 meter square market square. The two-storey, rectangular plastered building with its simple horizontal corner pilasters is divided into three parts with three window axes facing the market. A classicist triangular gable is located above the flat central risalit with the main entrance . The pronounced mansard roof is closed off by a central, open lantern. It is said that the master mason Frey built the building. Despite the classicism period, the house can still be assigned to the baroque style. Portals and window openings have segmental arches and are accentuated by bezels and indicated keystones. Ribbons adorn the plaster walls. Above the carved, two-winged wooden entrance door there is a rather modest balcony and above it a sundial. The year "1805" is forged into the balcony parapet; before the fall of the Wall , the old city coat of arms was emblazoned here. The tower clock is equipped with a movement made by JF Weule in 1900 and a bell that sounds every quarter of an hour with a time-dependent number of beats.

The town hall was extensively renovated around 1996 as part of general urban renewal .
