City Hall and Prison (Freixo de Numão)

The town hall and prison ( Portuguese Paços do Concelho e Cadeia ) is an ensemble of buildings in the Portuguese municipality of Freixo de Numão . It consists of the seat of the former district administration and the old prison. The ensemble is part of the protection zone around the pillory of the place .

history

According to a name on the corner, the prison was built in 1601. The town hall dates from the first half of the 18th century. At the end of 1853, the Freixo de Numão district was dissolved and incorporated into Vila Nova de Foz Côa . The town hall lost its function. In 1867, Father António Joaquim da Costa bought the Câmara building for 201,000 Réis.

The main facade of the town hall shows the coat of arms of King John V. The prison has a granite balcony. In one corner there are the inscriptions “1601” and “HIC VERITAS REPERIETVR”.
