Rathfriland Castle ( Irish Caisleán Ráth Fraoileann ) is a ruined castle in Rathfriland in County Down, Northern Ireland .

history

Rathfriland Castle was one of the seats of the Mag Aonghusa (Anglicised Magennis ) family, the lords of Uibh Eachach Cobha (Iveagh). Most of the castle was demolished by William Hawkins of London after the Irish Rebellion of 1641 . General Henry Ireton then destroyed the rest on the orders of Oliver Cromwell .

construction

The castle was a three- to four-story building with a stone barrel vault on the first floor, which - in contrast to a wooden ceiling - reduced the risk of fire.
