Quoile Castle ( Irish Caisleán an Chaoil ) is a ruined castle on the road from Downpatrick to Strangford , 1.5 miles from Downpatrick on the east bank of the River Quoile in County Down, Northern Ireland . It is a residential tower from the early 16th century that was inhabited until the 18th century. Quoile Castle is a State Care Historic Monument in Town Country of Quoile in District Newry, Morne and Down .

construction

The residential tower was built from quarry stone and has a sandstone cladding . The south corner of the building has collapsed and shows a vertical section through the castle. The entrance to the northeast wall has been rebuilt, through which one comes to a straight staircase built into the wall. This staircase is protected by a meurtrière at the top and bottom . The inner entrance on the ground floor opens into a room with stone vaults and many small loopholes. Behind it is a second room of the same size. The first floor is also divided into two rooms, one of which is equipped with an open fireplace. The 2nd floor can be reached via another straight flight of stairs in the northwest wall. There is another open fireplace there.
