Rational Application Developer |
Rational Application Developer ( RAD ) is an integrated development environment from IBM for the development and analysis of web , web services , Java , J2EE and portal applications . IBM Rational Application Developer is optimized for WebSphere software, but supports runtime environments from various providers and is based on the open-source Eclipse platform so that developers can adapt and expand their development environment.
RAD replaces the older product Websphere Studio Application Developer (WSAD), which is also based on Eclipse . The version number was continued with the renaming, so that the first version of RAD has the number 6.0. The current version is 9.
Overview
Rational Application Developer is an Eclipse-based integrated development environment that helps Java developers design, develop, and deploy their Java applications. It includes specialized wizards, editors and validators for various technologies:
- Java Platform, Enterprise Edition (Java EE) (incl. EJB, JPA, JSP and JSF)
- Web services
- Service Component Architecture (SCA)
- Extensible Markup Language (XML)
- Java EE Connector ( J2C )
- Web application
RAD includes tools for quality improvement of the code - static and dynamic code analysis, Java Profiling Tool, Line Code Coverage, etc.
To manage source code, development teams can configure Rational Application Developer to work with a source code repository system. The product comes with connectors for IBM Rational ClearCase for source code control and IBM Rational ClearQuest for defect management. As of Rational Application Developer Version 7.5, Rational Team Concert can also be used for source code control, defect management and teamwork.
The workbench contains tools for deploying an application to a local or remote server. It contains integrated test environments for IBM WebSphere Application Server and IBM WebSphere Portal and thus enables the applications to be deployed and tested locally. It supports Apache Tomcat and other application servers.
Because Rational Application Developer is Eclipse-based, it supports third-party plug-ins for Eclipse as well as plug-ins designed specifically for Rational Tools.
A 2009 study by Evans Data Corporation rated Rational Application Developer the highest for user satisfaction with IDEs.
The 2012 study by Evans Data Corporation of "Software Developer Platforms" ranked Rational # 1.
