List of domestic dogs

The Ratonero Mallorquín (Spanish) or Ca Rater Mallorquí (Catalan) is a Spanish breed of dog not recognized by the FCI .

Origin and history

This dog, native to Mallorca ( Balearic Islands ), is used as a companion and family dog , as a ratter (a dog that keeps the house and yard free of rodents) and for hunting rabbits. But the Ratero is also a useful watchdog . Opposite on the mainland there is also a ratter, the Ratonero Valenciano .

description

The Ratero is a small dog. He is the smallest among the original Majorcan dog species. His body shape is petite and elegant. The eyes are those of an observer. His height does not reach 40 cm with a weight of 3–5 kg. The ratio of body size to body length is 1: 1 in males, that is, height and length are the same, one speaks here of an animal with a square body. Bitches have a slightly longer body.

The skin is very fine and fits tightly. The fur is short and fine.

The hue is predominantly black or fire-colored with varying degrees of tint between these colors. Likewise, the feet and chest may be spotted white, or the whole body may be white with black spots. The head is black and fire-colored or entirely fire-colored. Shapes with brown and fire-colored fur appear rarely.

The proportions of the head of the Ratero harmonize with the entire body of the dog. The length of the skull is almost equal to its width and longer than the muzzle. The difference in volume between the skull and the snout with scissor bite stands out very much. The eyes are round, large and slightly protruding. The ears are erect and of medium size. They are in the shape of an acute triangle. At the attention stage, they do not protrude above the lateral head profile. The rod used to be docked to the last vertebra (not allowed in most European countries, including Germany).

Essence

Robust, insensitive dog, is sociable and adapts well to keeping in an apartment as well as on a farm or country house. He is open-minded and very lively. As a watchdog, it reliably fulfills its task and announces strangers before they even arrive. It is used with good success for hunting rabbits.
