Smoking cabin
A smoking cabin is a closed or semi-closed non - smoking protection system . Their task is to offer non-smokers the protection against passive smoking that is granted them by law. In addition, they serve as preventive fire protection .
Smoking cabins are available in different sizes, fittings and decors. Smoking cabins are used in places where smoking is banned, such as restaurants, discos, production halls, casinos, airports and shopping centers.
Suction technology
Tobacco smoke contains hazardous substances that are distributed in the room air . In order to prevent the substances from spreading and distributing in the first place, the smoke can either be sucked off by a directed air flow or initially enclosed in order to then be able to capture it. The most common solution for this is a smoking room enclosed by walls. Other providers offer partially or fully open solutions. The providers of closed systems argue with better retention of hazardous substances, providers of open systems with better communication between smokers and non-smokers.
The tobacco smoke can be discharged in two ways, either it is led outside or it is separated in a filter system. Which solution is the most economical depends on the individual case. When discharging to the outside, installation costs for pipes and heat exchangers can be incurred if you do not want to accept any heat losses from the discharged air. Filter solutions require regular maintenance and costs for filter replacement.
If tobacco smoke is retained with the help of a filter system, this must ensure that the various hazardous substances in tobacco smoke are safely retained.
Testing and certification
The cabin can be subjected to a voluntary test by the manufacturer. The Institute for Occupational Safety and Health of the German Social Accident Insurance (IFA) ceased its activities in this regard in March 2011, as the systems available for technical non-smoker protection could not provide as efficient non-smoker protection as a complete smoking ban.
Certified systems receive a certification mark from the certification body. This means that if the operating conditions defined by the manufacturer are complied with, it can be assumed that they meet the requirements for smoke-free workplaces, which are defined in Section 5, Paragraph 1 of the Workplace Ordinance. Certified systems are shown in a positive list.
The test criteria for the certification tests are:
- Complete capture and containment of tobacco smoke
- No smoke escaping, not even when air moves by people passing by
- No increase in the concentration of pollutants in the installation room
- Key components, according to which the filter effect is checked, are u. a. Nicotine, fine dust, aldehydes, volatile hydrocarbons
