Life

Leal studied law at the University of Coimbra from 1909 to 1913 , practicing as a lawyer until his retirement. A few years later he had to go into exile in Brazil for political reasons . He was in correspondence with the famous writer Jorge de Sena from 1957 to 1960. The state's honors for the poet are still rare, only in Amadora is a street named after the author.

In 1923 Leal was involved in one of the biggest literary scandals on the Iberian Peninsula: On March 3rd of that year, students of the right-wing extremist association " Alias " burned books by homosexual authors they disliked in Portugal. The works of Judite Teixeira and Antonio Bottos Canções were also burned. At that time Portugal was still a democracy , but authorities could not or would not prevent this. Leal's book " Sodoma Divinizada ", published in the year of the book burning, a volume of essays that explicitly dealt with the subject of homosexuality, had already been confiscated and banned and was also burned. Leal had no protection from foreign authors like the one Botto got. But since his work was viewed as scientific, he was left in peace as a person from then on, with the stipulation that he would never write again on this subject. (Botto had been persecuted because he showed no scientific value by the fictional representation of same-sex love in his work). The poet Fernando Pessoa helped both authors by publishing essays and manifestos in various journals under his name and that of his heteronyms in their defense.

Leal wrote for various newspapers and magazines, such as Centauro , Portugal Futurista , Athena , Sudoeste and the legendary magazine " Orpheu ". He was the author of novels, essays, poems and philosophical-occult works. Some poems have been translated into French.

As an occultist he had taken the name " Enoch " and was known for his Kabbalistic sessions. His work, whether in magazines or books, deals exclusively and for the most part with the topic of homosexuality , in which he also deals with his own and philosophy and occultism . The work was often referred to as eccentric because it was unique in Portugal in this form. He was also a follower of practical philosophy and practical occultism. So he wrote a book about how to save the world. The occult work was based on the trends of its time.
