Ravenstone Castle

Ravenstone Castle is a tower house near the Scottish town of Sorbie in the Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . In 1972 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

Shortly after 1455, a building was mentioned on the site. In the 16th century, an L-shaped tower house was built , which was referred to as Lochtoun or Remistoun in 1585 . In the second half of the 17th century the defense tower was expanded. After further additions in the early 19th century, a mansion was built , which was renewed around 1875.

In the 20th century, the vacant structure was in a ruinous state, so that in 1978 a demolition permit was applied for, but this was not granted. In 1992 it was placed on the Register of Listed Buildings at Risk in Scotland. Ravenstone Castle was acquired by a private individual in the 1980s and restoration work began in the following decade, which continued into the 2010s.

description

Ravenstone Castle is isolated about 3.5 kilometers southwest of Sorbie. The four-story building consists of two parallel, elongated building parts. In the east they end with a bolt with rounded sides, from which another wing extends. The masonry of the 14.8 x 11 m main building consists of quarry stone . The main portal with a crowning triangular gable , accessible via a front staircase, is located in the middle of the three-axis west facade. The two final gables are designed as a stepped gable with gable-side chimneys.

On the north side of Ravenstone Castle, the original slit windows and a wide loopholes from the 16th century are still partially preserved. All window openings on the rounded extension from the 19th century are designed with polished red sandstone bottles. After all floors and roofs were destroyed in 1988 with the exception of the vaulted cellar , Ravenstone Castle was partially habitable again in 2014.
