The magazine is published in Watford and in 1998 was awarded the Prix CAMERA of UNESCO as the best art magazine. In 1991 Raw Vision had 700 subscribers, in 2007 the circulation of John Maizels is given as 8,000 copies.

history

The painter John Maizels, who trained at the Chelsea College of Art and Design in London , became aware of Art brut in 1974 after reading Roger Cardinal's book "Outsider Art".

When I came across Outsider art I was just so amazed by it, it was so powerful and it had such strong personal meaning ... people are revealing themselves, their demons, their own aspirations, their own inner feelings ... They don ' t go to exhibitions or private views, they just work. They've got an inner compulsion. - John Maizels, editor of Raw Vision, quoted in Dan Bell.

After visiting collections and visionary environments, he decided to fight for the existence of this art direction. First he published the Fanzine Zombic News before he published the first edition of Raw Vision with some volunteers in the spring of 1989, supported by Roger Cardinal, Michel Thévoz , John McGregor and American collectors.

The magazine initially appeared irregularly, then every six months. It was published in French and English until 1997, with Laurent Danchin overseeing the French edition in Paris . The French edition had to be discontinued due to a lack of financial support from galleries and museums. Across the Channel, and particularly in the United States , the magazine has received great support from a network of galleries, museums and collectors. The founding of the Outsider Art Fair , an international art fair in New York, played a key role in maintaining the magazine's quality and dynamism. Raw Vision itself became an important part of this network.

content

In each richly illustrated edition, around ten artists are presented and further information on the subject of outsider art, such as exhibition dates, book and exhibition reviews, conference reports and obituaries, is published.

The magazine was described as the Rolling Stone of Outsider Art and in 2007 was named as the only publication that deals exclusively with this art form.

The European Union made one million euros available to Raw Vision in 2003 to present a traveling exhibition on outsider art.
