Ray Milton Blanchard (born October 9, 1945 in Hammonton , New Jersey ) is an American sexologist and psychologist who specializes in paraphilia , sexual orientation and transsexuality .

Blanchard, who studied psychology at the University of Pennsylvania , has worked as a sexologist at the Center for Addiction and Mental Health (formerly: Clarke Institute of Psychiatry) in Toronto , Canada , since 1980 . The sexologist attracted particular attention through an explanatory model for transsexuality and transvestitism that he developed in 1989. According to this, trans women can essentially be divided into two groups: extremely feminine homosexual men and men who are sexually aroused by the idea of being a woman themselves (so-called autogynophiles ). This thesis is received very differently in the professional world.

As part of the revision of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders , Blanchard was appointed chairman of the “Paraphilias” working group. In his role in 2008, he proposed, in addition to the sexual preference in pre-pubescent children ( pedophilia ), to pathologize a sexual interest in pubescent adolescents between the ages of around eleven and fourteen ( hebephilia ) in the future . The proposal sparked an intense debate and was ultimately not adopted. On the other hand, a suggestion by Blanchard to differentiate between paraphilias and paraphilic disorders in the future was adopted . In the future, a paraphilic sexual interest will only be classified as a mental disorder if the patient suffers from it himself or if other persons are harmed by acting out the corresponding tendency.

Ray Blanchard does extensive research into determining sexual preferences using penile plethysmography . It is also assumed that he coined the term teleiophilia . He used it for the first time publication from the year 2000 to differentiate a sexual interest in adult humans from other chronophilias .
