Ray Jackendoff

Ray Jackendoff (* 1945 ) is an American linguist . He has been Professor of Philosophy at Tufts University in Medford , Massachusetts since 2005 . From 1971 to 2005 he was Professor of Linguistics at Brandeis University in Waltham , Massachusetts.

His work ranges between generative grammar and cognitive linguistics . As a student of Noam Chomsky , he believes in an innate universal grammar , whereby his research encompasses the semantics of natural languages as well as their lexical and syntactic manifestations. Jackendoff has also researched the relationship between consciousness and the computational theory of mind and, together with Fred Lerdahl (* 1943), musical cognition. He developed his theory of Conceptual Semantics into a comprehensive theory of the fundamentals of language . In 2000 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 2003 he was awarded the Jean Nicod Prize . For 2014 he was awarded the Rumelhart Prize .
