Raymond Allen Jackson
Raymond Allen Jackson aka JAK (born March 11, 1927 in London , † July 27, 1997 ibid) was a British cartoonist. By his own admission, he was the first to caricature the Queen .
life and work
Jackson, the son of a tailor, had to wear glasses from early childhood due to his nearsightedness. He studied at an art school from 1941 to 1943 and served as a drawing teacher in the Royal Army Educational Corps for three years from 1945. From 1948 to 1950 Jackson completed a design degree, first to work for a magazine publisher and then for an advertising agency. In 1952 he moved to the advertising department of the Evening Standard , where he was quickly transferred to the arts and sports pages. After a stay abroad and the suicide of Victor Weisz , he became his successor as a political cartoonist for the Evening Standard . Jackson, who signed JAK , also drew for Mail on Sunday , Daily Express, and Sunday Express . He died at his Wimbledon home in July 1997. Several books of his caricatures have been published.
