Raymond Stevens (Judoka)

Raymond Stevens (born July 26, 1963 in Camberley ) is a former British judoka who won the 1992 Olympic silver medal in the light heavyweight division.

Athletic career

The 1.83 m tall Stevens started in the light middleweight up to 78 kilograms. In 1984 he switched to the middleweight division up to 86 kilograms, and from 1990 he fought in the light heavyweight division up to 95 kilograms.

In 1986 he won the Commonwealth Games middleweight division, 1990 light heavyweight division. At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona he reached the semifinals with three Ippon victories. There he defeated the Pole Paweł Nastula by referee decision (yusei-Gachi). In the final he was defeated by the Hungarian Antal Kovács by a Yuko rating.

At the European Championships in 1994 Stevens reached the final with four wins, there he was subject to the Poles Paweł Nastula. The following year he finished fifth at the European Championships in Birmingham. At the World Championships in Chiba , he reached seventh place. In 1996 he was eliminated from the European Championships in the first round against the Dutchman Ben Sonnemans . On this Stevens met in the round of 16 of the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta and was eliminated.
