The Rayon Sports Football Club is a Rwandan football club from Nyanza . Between 1986 and 2012 the club was based in Kigali . With eight national championship titles, the club is one of the most successful in its country.

History and background

Rayon Sports was founded in 1968 and soon played in the highest Rwandan league . The club won the first documented championship in 1975, followed by the second title in 1981. At the same time, the team was also successful in the national cup competition .

After the capital city club Panthères Noires had dominated the championship in the 1980s, APR FC took its place in the early 1990s . The Rayon Sports, which had moved to the capital, was only able to break through the supremacy in isolated cases, as evidenced by isolated cup wins in the 1980s and 1990s as well as the championship wins in 1997, 1998, 2002 and 2004 under coach Raoul Shungu . In 1998 the club won its first international title in the CECAFA Club Cup , in the final Mlandege from Zanzibar was defeated with a 2-1 win. In the Champions League , the club was just as unsuccessful during its time in Kigali as it was after its return to Nyanza. For this he qualified as champion in 2013 with five points ahead of Police FC . With a goal from Diarra Ismailla , the team won the trophy again in 2016 in the final against APR FC. In 2017 they became champions again.
