The Razzaza Lake ( Arabic بحيرة الرزازة, DMG Buḥairat ar-Razzāza , also Buhairat al-Milh ) is the southernmost of the larger lakes in central Iraq . It is located southwest of Baghdad near Karbala in the governorates of Karbala and al-Anbar . The other two lakes are Tharthar Lake , which is the largest, and Al-Habbaniyya Lake , the smallest and located in the middle.
In 1955 the Ramadi weir on the Euphrates was built to divert water into the Habbaniyya Depression . In the event of a very large flood, the water was passed through a canal and the Muddschara regulator into the larger Abu Dibbis Depression. The outflowless lake Razzaza was created from this.
The storage space of the Razzaza lake is 26 billion m³, the al-Habbaniyya lake and the Razzaza lake can together hold 29.30 billion m³. The structure data in the table refer to the Ramadi weir.
