rdesktop is a free remote desktop client for Microsoft's proprietary Remote Desktop Protocol . rdesktop enables remote access from a Unix-like system to a computer running Windows (from NT4 to Windows Server 2012 R2 ) via a network connection . The Windows Terminal Server must be started on the remote computer.

In contrast to other methods such as VNC , here the remote system writes directly to the local desktop. This results in a clear performance advantage compared to methods in which the output occurs first on the (real or virtual) remote desktop, where it is then scanned and then forwarded to the local system.

rdesktop runs on most Unix-like systems such as FreeBSD , NetBSD , OpenBSD or GNU / Linux if an X11 server is available there. For OS / 2 and eComStation , versions for XFree86 and Presentation Manager are available.

rdesktop was programmed by Matthew Chapman and is licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL). The current version is 1.9.0 from October 11, 2019.

In the meantime, there is a follow-up project with FreeRDP that includes current RDP functionalities such as B. implemented remoteFX and is under an Apache license . This project is financially supported by the Open Source Business Alliance as part of the Open Thin Client Alliance .
