RealSpace

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

RealSpace is a 3D graphics engine that was developed by Origin for the game Strike Commander . A revised version was later used in Pacific Strike and Wings of Glory .

description

The engine was developed for use in a flight simulation , the focus was on a detailed representation of the environment.

RealSpace was able to display textured surfaces with color gradients. The planes were also given Gouraud shading , which made certain contours appear rounder. All planes, as well as tanks and ships, were textured.

The lack of the engine was the hardware requirements, which were quite high for the time: For all the details an 80486 DX, better an 80486DX2, with min. 4 MB (8 MB recommended) RAM .

Since the original source code of Strike Commander and the RealSpace engine was probably lost when Origin was closed, and therefore no support or porting exists or is to be expected ( abandonware ), a reverse engineering project with a reconstructed version of the source code of Fabien Sanglard made available on Github .

Retrieved January 23, 2014: “ Most people assume the source codes and gold versions of all finished games were stored in a Vault somewhere at EA. But after getting in touch with people at Wing Commander CIC, it appeared that all the source code was lost when the company closed. [...] On his first day one developer managed to delete the full 900MB of Strike Commander source tree. "
