In Pacific Strike is a historical flight simulation , by the company in 1994 Origin was published. The game is similar to its unofficial predecessor Strike Commander , mainly because the graphics engine and a large part of the programming was taken over by Strike Commander . Will McBurnett was the chief developer.

action

Course of action

The action is set between 1941 and 1945 . In the intro to the game, the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 is shown, the plot of the game follows immediately. The player slips into the role of an unnamed hero and in the first mission with his comrade from the Ewa airfield in a Grumman F4F 'Wildcat' must fight the approaching Japanese and then save the battleship Nevada from sinking. The Navy became aware of his flying achievements and transferred him and his comrades to the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise .

The player now has to complete different missions, most of which have a historical background. To be adjusted u. a. the Doolittle Raid , the Battle of Midway , the Battle of Guadalcanal , the Battle of Northern Solomon Islands , the battles at Truk , Rabaul , Guam and Iwo Jima . The development of the game also depends on the success of the missions. If you successfully complete the missions, the war ends earlier and Japan surrenders. If too many missions fail, the Americans can withdraw from the Pacific. In the event of an American success, the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima depends on the success or failure of the last mission in which the player is supposed to destroy the headquarters of the Commander in Chief of the Japanese military in order to induce the government to surrender.

Manual

Origin also attached great importance to a good manual for Pacific Strike . The almost 100-page book contains not only the keyboard layout, but also a historical overview, a list of aircraft types and ships with pictures and additional information, as well as important information on flight techniques, flight maneuvers and attack and defense tactics. Although the game was only sold in English, there was a translated manual for the German market.

Gameplay

As with Strike Commander , the missions are embedded in a framework story. In addition, crew members provide further information and opinions on the course of the war.

The player must fly all types of missions. Air attack, air defense, attack on enemy ships and on positions on land. Initially, both the function within the squadron and the type of aircraft are specified, after a promotion the player is free to choose the aircraft and weapons. After a further transport, the deployment of the personnel and the aircraft for the deployment itself must be determined.

Even with Pacific Strike comes RealSpace storage engine used. Using Gouraud shading and texture mapping, this engine also allowed Strike Commander to display realistic-looking environments.

In addition to the main program, the “Speech Pack” was published as an extension. This extended the flight and some key cutscenes with digital voice acting.

In contrast to other titles, Pacific Strike was never released on CD, and a complete voice output was never implemented for the game.

Planes

Initially, three aircraft are used:

Due to technical developments, the squadron will be supplemented by newer aircraft types or previous models will be replaced in the course of the game :

The main opponents on the Japanese side are the types Nakajima B5N Kate , Mitsubishi A5M Claude , Mitsubishi A6M Zero , Nakajima B6N Jill , Aichi D3A Val and Yokosuka D4Y Judy .

Reviews

PC Games : 90% (06/94) "Even with the intro, you have more of the feeling of watching a Spielberg film than playing a flight simulation."
