The Real Academia de Ciencias Morales y Políticas (RACMP, German: Royal Academy of Moral and Political Sciences ) is Spain's national academy of sciences in the field of humanities and social sciences . It was founded on September 30, 1857 and is based in Madrid . The academy is divided into sections for philosophy , political science and law , sociology and economics .

In its spacious rooms, the academy has a professionally maintained reference library of 120,000 volumes, which is continuously updated. The seat of the academy is the venerable Casa y Torre de los Lujanes, Plaza de la Villa 2, in old Madrid.

As ordinary and corresponding members, this academy, which has existed since the middle of the 19th century, brings together outstanding scientists and scholars who, through their research, have made a decisive contribution to the advancement of knowledge and the expansion of knowledge in their respective disciplines. The academy sees itself as a place of interdisciplinary exchange on methods and results of research work, as a laboratory for novel research ideas and creative scientific approach, and as a permanent forum for critical discourse on current and future issues in Spanish society. The aims of the academy are to develop and preserve the intellectual and cultural heritage of the country, to stimulate and sustainably promote innovative thinking in the fields of knowledge of ethics, politics, economics and law, as well as to provide public information about the current status and trends in social science developments in Spain.

Similar to the Real Academia de Ciencias Morales y Políticas, there is the Real Academia de Ciencias Exactas, Físicas y Naturales for the field of mathematics and natural sciences .

history

The Academy was founded by royal decree of September 30, 1857 during the reign of Queen Isabella II of Spain. Today the partnership consists of 44 full members and 50 Spanish and foreign corresponding members. The full members meet weekly for a plenary session. The philosophy, politics and law, social and economic sciences section committees meet on a monthly basis. The academy's program includes regular lecture events, award ceremonies for outstanding research achievements, contact and exchange with academic academies abroad, particularly in South America, and the publication of academic monographs. All activities of the academy are documented in the annual Anales .

Known members

In the history of the academy, many members have achieved international fame, including: a. the politicians and lawyers Francisco Martínez de la Rosa , Antonio Alcalá Galiano , Antonio Cánovas de Castillo, Jlián Besteiro and the social philosophers Antonio Cavanilles, Marcelino Menéndes y Pelayo, José Ortega y Gasset, Joaquin Ruiz-Giménez and Salvador de Madariaga. The Academy’s current president is SEMarcelino Oreja Aguirre, Marqués de Oreja.
