The Museum of the History of Madrid ( Spanish, Museo de Historia de Madrid ) is a municipal museum dedicated to the history of the city of Madrid . The museum opened in 1929 (originally Museo Municipal ) and is located in the former Royal Hospice of San Fernando ( Real Hospicio de San Fernando ), a baroque building from the early 18th century by the architect Pedro de Ribera .

building

The Royal Hospice of San Fernando goes back to the work of the canonized religious Simón de Rojas in 1988 , who in 1612 founded the Congregación de los Esclavos del Dulcísimo nombre de María (Servant of the Sweetest Name Maria) to look after beggars and other needy workers ; this congregation founded a poor house in 1668, which was moved to Fuencarral Street in 1674 under the auspices of Maria Anna of Austria , second wife of King Philip IV of Spain ; The current building was erected here from 1721 (completed in 1725) under the guidance of the architect Pedro de Ribera, which with its main facade is considered to be one of the most representative buildings of the late Baroque Churriguera style.

The entire building complex was placed under protection as early as 1919; In 1922 the hospice stopped working and the building threatened to fall into disrepair without further use; at the instigation of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando , the building was used in 1926 after an initial restoration for a large-scale exhibition on the history of Madrid; this became the cornerstone of the Museo Municipal, which opened in 1929 . The museum was closed in 2002 for a complete renovation and complete redesign and only reopened in December 2014 under the new name Museo historico de Madrid .

collection

The museum covers the history of Madrid from the 16th century when Madrid was declared the capital of Spain - the municipal collections covering the earlier history of Madrid are on display in the Museum of San Isidro . The museum collections are spread over a total of 14 rooms and are characterized by their typological and thematic diversity. Paintings, sculptures, furniture, fans from the 18th and 19th centuries, plans, models, porcelain from the factories of Buen Retiro and Moncloa, and silverware are particularly noteworthy.
