Their tasks include, in particular, the supervision of the Corpus Christi procession and the implementation of the four processions during Lent in the city of Mafra .

history

Statute of 1725

The brotherhood was first mentioned on March 14, 1597, when they were awarded 1,100 Réis in a will . The statute of July 5, 1725, which was ratified on July 19 of the same year by Cardinal Tomás de Almeida (1670–1754), has been preserved.

In 1866 the fraternity acquired the property of the then dissolved Third Order of the Franciscans of Mafra, on condition that the procession previously carried out by the Franciscans be held every year.

The Brotherhood enjoyed until the proclamation of the Republic on October 5, 1910 the protection of the kings of Portugal , Manuel II. , Last king of Portugal was settled honorary director of the Brotherhood.
