The Realschule am Judenstein ( RsaJ ) is a secondary school in Regensburg , which has received several prizes and awards from the state through school-wide projects and social engagement around the school. The school takes its name from a street name of the same name that has been handed down since the 17th century. The official name is Staatliche Realschule Regensburg I .

prehistory

The school is partly located in the buildings of the town's Kreuzschule , which was built in 1870 for Catholic boys and girls. In 1909 a north wing was added to the Kreuzschule, and a residential building that belonged to the artist Albrecht Altdorfer had to be demolished .

The Realschule started teaching in the school year 1955/56 in the building of the Kreuzschule with three classes. From 1955 onwards, the townspeople spoke unofficially of the "Middle School on the Judenstein", and from 1965 of the "Realschule am Judenstein".
Due to the great popularity, the school had to be divided in 1963: The second state secondary school in Regensburg - the Albert Schweitzer secondary school - was added. For many years the school had to spread its operations over several buildings. It was not until 1982 that the previously official name “Staatliche Realschule Regensburg I” was officially replaced by “Realschule am Judenstein”.

Origin of the school name

Jewish tombstone from the looting of the cemetery in 1519

When the Jewish community of Regensburg was forcibly evicted in 1519, Christians destroyed and looted the Jewish quarter and the synagogue as well as the Jewish cemetery . The more than four thousand gravestones on it - so-called Jewish stones - were stolen and some were used as trophies. Today about 60 of these "Jew stones" are still preserved.

The street name "Am Judenstein", which is still valid today, has been used since the beginning of the 17th century. The name goes back to an oversized tombstone set in the earth, which was removed around 1928 when the nearby Church of the Sacred Heart was built.
The stone currently attached to the outer wall of the “Realschule Am Judenstein” is, however, a smaller one, the inscription of which was smeared with mortar or defaced with pseudo-Hebrew characters.

present

In the school year 1981/82 it was possible for the first time to bring all classes under one roof after a partial renovation and a partial new building of the main building. In 1982 the school was given the official name "Realschule am Judenstein" in the presence of the then Israeli ambassador. Another renovation took place in the 1995/96 school year, namely the part of the building that was left out during the first renovation. This led to good technical equipment in the classrooms.

The Bavarian State Ministry for Education and Culture elevated the Realschule am Judenstein to a seminar school for the training of Realschule teachers. Between 1997 and 2004, a school development was carried out to systematically improve school quality in cooperation with the Chair of School Education at the University of Regensburg and the Pedagogical Institute of the City of Nuremberg. In 2000 the Realschule am Judenstein was divided into six stages.

The school is run by the Bavarian Ministry of Culture, the local school management consists of Alois Einhauser, Erich Bauer and Jürgen Moßburger.

The school got its own school logo a few years ago, this was created by Franz Huber, who works as an art teacher at the school. The symbol is intended to depict the school and the entire school structure.
